Acupuncture Treatment Guidelines

Treatment with acupuncture in general is safe, any adverse side effects during or after treatment are extremely rare and very unlikely when given by trained and experienced practitioners. However, sometimes, although rare, a bruise may occur at the site that has been needled. If this happens, there is no cause for concern, it may take a few days to disappear, it can happen to clients who are especially prone to bruising.

To receive optimal results from your acupuncture treatments, these are some guidelines which can help maximize your treatment benefits:

  • Please make sure that your full medical history is entered on the patient intake form, including any medication you are currently taking.
  • Please make sure to let us know if you are pregnant or possibly pregnant.
  • For patients who wish to receive labor induction, please be accompanied by another person who is able to drive.
  • Please provide details of any prior history of fainting, panic attacks, a tendency to low blood sugar or diabetes, blood disorders such as hemophilia or any information you feel might be relevant to your receiving acupuncture or Chinese herbal medicine.
  • Arrive early to prevent rushing before your treatment.
  • On the day of treatment do not drink any alcohol, take any recreational drugs, nor eat a large meal two hours prior to treatment. But also do not come with an empty stomach, so eat something light beforehand.
  • Please remember to turn off your cell phone.
  • Take things slowly directly after treatment, ease back gently into your day (Taking a nap or a rest after treatment usually results in a better response).
  • If you feel a little sleepy or very relaxed after treatment, drink a cup of warm water, sit down for five minutes or go for a short stroll, this is a common effect but soon passes.
  • If you have to leave at a certain time, let us know before your treatment starts.
