Chinese herbal medicine

Chinese medicinal herbs have been the foundation of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for over 5,000 years. The fundamental idea of living in harmony with nature and the environment forms the basis for the use of Chinese herbs, as well as the traditional Chinese approach to health. Knowledge of the healing power of Chinese herbs has been passed down from generation to generation, and have gradually spread to western countries where they are welcomed by progressive western consumers who seek natural, healthy and balanced alternative answers for their health needs.

Traditional Chinese Herbal Remedies

Traditional Chinese Medicine is very different from the western scientific approach we are accustomed to. Chinese medical experts promote the dynamic balance of yin and yang – two forces present in all of nature. When yin or yang forces or qi/energy levels are off-balance in the body and spirit, health problems arise. Chinese herbs and herbal remedies are used to help realign an individual’s internal balance in order to improve overall well-being.

Chinese herbal formulas include hundreds of popular organic ingredients that are primarily of plant origin, and may include roots, bark, seeds, flowers and leaves. Some (though very few) animal parts are used as well. Each ingredient typically has unique characteristics that are skillfully combined and formulated according to the personal needs of each person and modified based on the subsequent response. In this way, Chinese herbal formulas can be adapted to suit each individual’s requirements resulting in a synergistic herbal remedy which is safe and effective.

Herbal remedies can be given in a raw form which needs to be cooked, as granulated powders (extracts from the raw herbs) which are added to warm water, or in pill /tablet /capsule forms. According to the person’s condition, practitioners will recommend which form is better.

Herbs may not smell or taste pleasant, it may cause problems (usually mild and rare) such as stomach upset, but on the whole Chinese herbs are very safe, effective and powerful especially if they are prescribed by experienced herbalists.

If you are prescribed herbs at the clinic, it will be explained to you what they are for and how to take them, during the treatment process you will be constantly evaluated to ensure the herbs are having the desired effect. If any animal parts are given, your permission is asked first before treatment.
